The opening of two new bridges in Za’abeel and Al Quoz 1 by Dubai’s RTA
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has officially opened two major bridges crossing Za’abeel and Al Quoz 1 on Al Khail Road in the direction of Jebel Ali. The two new bridges extend 1,350 meters and can handle up to 8,000 vehicles per hour in each direction. RTA also announced that the expansion of Al Khail Road is 80% completed. The project includes 3,300 meters of bridges and lane extension over 6,820 meters.
Improving Traffic Flow on Al Khail Road
These improvements span seven key locations along Al Khail Road, including Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Za’abeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadir Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The primary goal is to reduce travel time by 30%, boost the capacity of intersections and existing bridges to 19,600 vehicles per hour, and enhance the overall efficiency of traffic on Al Khail Road. Additionally, the project seeks to resolve bottlenecks at flyover bridges and ensure smooth, continuous traffic flow.
Project Goals and Road Infrastructure Improvements
The project, in accordance with Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, comes within the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai; the infrastructure of the road network needs to keep pace with Dubai’s sustained development through continuous development. The initiative is also led by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defense, ensuring that the infrastructure supports urban development and population growth in addition to enhancing the flow of traffic.
“This project plays a crucial role in the development of parallel road corridors, complementing Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. Al Khail Road is a major arterial road, starting from Business Bay Intersection up to the intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It will have five lanes in each direction with an expansion to six lanes in some parts,” Al Tayer said.
Inauguration of Two Bridges
The first two bridges inaugurated in Za’abeel, and these two bridges connected the traffic coming from Za’abeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street across Al Khail Road to the direction of Jebel Ali. The 700-meter long bridge is three lanes and has a capacity of 4800 vehicles per hour. A second bridge at Al Quoz 1 links traffic coming from Meydan Street with Al Khail Road heading towards Jebel Ali, extending to 650 meters and comprising two lanes. It has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
Site 1: Al Jaddaf
Site 1 involves improvement works at Al Jaddaf, where there is an excavation of an additional lane to complement easy traffic flow into Deira. This readies the capacity of traffic in this particular section to be expanded by 2,000 vehicles per hour between Oud Metha Street and Financial Center Road. Also, a new 700-meter-long three-lane bridge will link traffic streaming from Za’abeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street into Al Khail Road. The enhancement of surface roads for 850 meters will provide connectivity between Al Khail Road and Financial Center Road toward Sheikh Zayed Road.
Site 2: Meydan Area
At Meydan Area, between Meydan Street and Ras Al Khor Street along Al Khail Road, the work entails the construction of a two-lane bridge, 610 meters in length, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. It will link traffic between Meydan Street and Al Khail Road, facilitating movement toward Deira. The works also include 1,550 metres of surface road improvements to facilitate the smoother flow of traffic coming from Al Khail Road to Ras Al Khor Street.
Site 3 and Site 4: Al Quoz 1 and Ghadir Al Tair
Site 3 concerns improvements along Al Quoz 1 between Meydan Street and Al Waha Street. It includes a two-lane bridge, 650 meters long and with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour, to connect Meydan Street traffic to Al Khail Road in the direction of Jebel Ali. The improvements at surface road level are 2,170 meters in length, aimed at streamlining traffic from Al Khail Road to Al Waha Street and Latifa bint Hamdan Street. At Site 4, Ghadir Al Tair, the construction of a two-lane bridge shall be extended to 640 meters with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. This will help in traffic flow from Latifa bint Hamdan Street to Al Khail Road going toward Deira. Other improvements on the surface road include a 1,350-meter additional improvement that will further connect from Al Khail Road up to Meydan Street.
Site 5: Jumeirah Village Circle
At Site 5, the Jumeirah Village Circle will be completed with a two-lane bridge 700 meters long and will accommodate up to 3,200 vehicles per hour. It will connect traffic coming from Al Khail Road to Hessa Street and will provide further improvements along 900 meters to link Jumeirah Village Circle traffic to Al Khail Road heading toward Deira.
Progress at Site 6 and Site 7
In May, the RTA completed widening works in Site 6 at Al Jaddaf and Site 7 in Business Bay. In Al Jaddaf, an extra lane was built on the 600-meter section of Al Khail Road as through traffic to Deira to raise its intake by 2,000 vehicles per hour. While at the Business Bay, enhancements on surface roads included the reconfiguration of a 435-meter lane, which would improve traffic safety and increase the capacity of traffic flowing towards Jebel Ali. Another three bridges are due to open before the end of October, and will further ease the flow of traffic towards Deira.
Conclusion: A Major Leap Forward for Dubai’s Traffic Management
With the opening of these bridges and ongoing improvements to Al Khail Road, the daily lives of Dubai’s residents will significantly improve. The reduction in travel time, enhanced safety, and lower pollution levels are just a few of the many benefits that this project brings. Moreover, this initiative will strengthen the local economy and attract investors. As Dubai continues to evolve, its infrastructure projects, such as this one, will play a critical role in shaping the city’s future.
