Their union was a turning point in the nation’s history, and from the ashes of the traditional desert, life rose to the modern country known today as the UAE. Today, when you take a glance at the country, you find it impossible to believe that it’s tallest monuments were once sand dunes. This article is a guide to UAE royal families; the great families who turned sand into concrete and built the UAE from the ground up.

Introduction of Royal Families of the 7 Emirates of UAE

UAE’s Ruling System

The country we recognize today as the United Arab Emirates is a union formed by seven emirates: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah (with Ras Al Khaimah joining the union in 1972), governed by six royal families. These emirates were once independent nations, but in 1971, a union was formed, bringing together 6 of the emirates. After the formation of the union, the UAE flag (we have covered the history of the UAE flag in another article) was raised for the first time on December 2nd, 1971, by the country’s founding father and first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Since then, the unification of the emirates and formation of the UAE has been commemorated every year on the UAE National Day, during which the country goes vibrant, and the celebrations attract not only locals but also tourists from all around the world. The UAE’s major cities such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai offer a plethora of fun all year round, but every year things change for the better on December 2nd you’ll find many things to do for the UAE National Day in Dubai and Abu Dhabi as well as other emirates (we have gathered for you a thorough list of UAE public holidays for 2023 in another article).

Now that the UAE is a unified nation, each emirate is like a separate state and has its own ruler, titled Emir. The seven Emirs come from the UAE’s royal lineage and form the highest legislative and executive authority in the UAE, the Federal Supreme Council. Every five years, the members of the council elect one of the Emirs as the UAE president and one as the deputy or prime minister.

The ruling families of the seven emirates are descendants of different tribes except the royal families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai that descend directly from the same tribe. Furthermore, the seven emirates are actually ruled by 6 royal families. That’s because the emirates of Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah are ruled by two branches of a single family. Each of the seven rulers of the emirates is a member of the Federal Supreme Council, which governs the UAE. Prime minister and cabinet are then appointed by the Federal Supreme Council. Now that you’ve got a glimpse of the UAE’s ruling system, let’s review the royal families one by one.

The Royal Families of the UAE

In this section of the article, we are going to provide a brief introduction to each of the UAE’s royal families, starting with the Abu Dhabi royal family and their prominent members. We will also review some of their contributions to the development of the nation.

1. Abu Dhabi Royal Family

  • Dynasty: Al Nahyan

The emirate of Abu Dhabi, home to the capital of the UAE, the famous city of Abu Dhabi, is the largest of the seven emirates and has been governed by the Al Nahyan family since 1855. This proud and noble royal family descends from a subsection of the Bani Yas tribe; Al Bu Falah, also known as the House of Al Falahi. Bani Yas was a powerful tribe in ancient Arabia residing in the oasis of Liwa which nowadays is among the best UAE camping spots. The tribe moved from the oasis and settled in Abu Dhabi 1793, residing in Qasr Al Hosn (Al Hosn Palace), a watch tower overlooking the sea built in the same decade with the aim of safeguarding the city. The palace is now the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi and has been serving as a museum since 2018.

The current ruler of the Al Nahyan family is Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The house of Al Nahyan has also bred the previous president of the UAE. Moreover, the Al Nahyan family is the fourth wealthiest royal family in the world, with an estimated worth of 150 billion dollars.
