As you probably know, the Dubai Metro is the first of its kind. Also, it is among the most advanced and unique ones in the world. However, at first, few people were keen on the idea. This was because they believed no one will use this mode of transportation.
According to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this project is among the most valuable ones due to some reasons. For instance, one of the benefits of the Dubai Metro is providing a safe transportation. As well as that, it has recorded a punctuality rate of 99.7 percent after 10 years.
Sheikh Mohammed has also said that Dubai Metro is a key component of Dubai’s infrastructure. Besides, it shows the advancement of Dubai’s solutions making life easier for people.
Actually, the success of Dubai Metro is the embodiment of forward-thinking decisions. In addition, it shows the importance of future-oriented solutions in the success of Dubai as a leader in the region.
It is interesting to note that the investments of Dubai in the sector of roads and transport reaches almost Dh100 billion. This subject has led to Dubai’s strong infrastructure. These actions turn Dubai into a city that is second to none.
The history
On Wednesday, 09.09.2009 at 09.09.09pm, the Red Line of the Metro was opened by Sheikh Mohammed. It spans 52km and comprises 29 stations (four underground, 24 elevated and one at-grade). Two years after that, on 09.09.2011, he established the Green Line. The Green Line extends 23km and comprises 18 stations (six underground and 12 elevated). The intersection of these lines is at the Union and Burjuman stations.
According to the RTA, Sheikh Mohammed thought of Dubai Metro as the backbone of transportation. He wanted a useful mean of transportation connecting hotspots of the Emirate besides being safe. Finally, he could built metro facilities that not only meet the global standards, but also exceed the global excellence.
The public transport has showed a steady growth of about 9 percent since 2006. In other words, it was 6 percent rising to 17.5 in 2018. This figure will reach 26 percent by 2030.
Route 2020
On June 29, 2016, Sheikh Mohammed signed the contract for the Route 2020 Project. This project is aimed to extend the Dubai Metro Red Line from Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station to the site of Expo 2020.
The route has 7 stations extending 15Km. It is especially for highly populated areas with more than 270,000 people such as The Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates and the Dubai Investment Park.
Using this system, the transit time between Dubai Marina and Expo will be only 16 minutes. Also, the Route 2020 is able to carry 46,000 riders per hour in both directions.
All of these turn Dubai into a city with high standards as well as superb infrastructure.
